How to use Whatsapp or Viber in Spain free of roaming charges

How to use Whatsapp or Viber in Spain free of roaming charges

We all know that the Whatsapp and Viber apps are associated to our local phone number.
If you’re planning on travelling to Spain, the best way to avoid the unpleasant surprise of the high roaming charges and keep using these apps is finding a reliable local wifi connection in Spain. That, of course, can be easily found in bars with free wifi, in the holiday apartment or internet cafes.
What if the apartment has no wifi connection? Or what if you have to stay connected at all times? The truth is that internet cafes or wifi in bars are not the most private or convenient solutions.

Here’s how you get a private internet connection in Spain, prepaid and roaming free!

By using a mifi dongle (it’s a portable tiny device that works with a Spanish data sim card and allows you to simultaneously connect all your devices – phones, tablets or laptops, by sharing the internet connection; it can be used everywhere in Spain, indoors or outdoors) you don’t need to worry anymore about annoying potential extra charges.

These wifi rental services in Spain are completely prepaid. You can either rent it with 5 Gb (that’s recommended for a normal user: whatsapp, Viber, Facebook, e-mail, banking etc) or you can choose a prepaid unlimited data wifi connection in Spain (this, indeed, allows you to stream online movies, youtube, Facetime video, Skype video, unlimited Viber calls, heavy downloads or uploads…it’s just like the adsl/broadband connection you have at home).

Estimating, the prices for the 40GB  internet in Spain are from about 5€ a day, while the 5Gb connection, via mifi dongle is about 49€ a month.

Depending of every user’s needs, I’d recommend renting a mobile wifi Spain (either limited or unlimited) instead of just buying a local data sim card (which is between 15€ and 25€, depending on the operator) and insert it in your phones…Must have an unlocked phone, must configure the Spanish APN parameters of the local operators (Orange, Movistar, Vodafone, MasMovil etc), plus the customer service of all the above mentioned Spanish operators is provided exclusively in SPANISH!

All you need to know about internet access in spain

All you need to know about internet access in spain

If you’re planning to move to Spain or to just enjoy being a tourist in Spain, we gathered here all in the information you need to get internet access in Spain

There are two major options to get wifi connection in Spain:

Fixed broadband – ADSL

This is the ideal type of Spanish internet connection for people that are planning to live in Spain for longer than a year, since most of the internet service providers in Spain require a minimum one year of commitment and an wifi installation fee (average price for the internet router equipment is 60-70€).

The average price for the adsl in Spain, depending on the Spanish internet provider, is about 50€ per month.

Most of the internet companies in Spain install, by default, a landline (fixed phone) along with the wifi equipment.

The physical installation of the internet at home might take between 2-3 working days and, depending on the coverage and availability, up to 2 month ( in technologically difficult areas).

Before you decide to hire a Spanish internet operator for your adsl service, you must know that, in Spain, the monopoly is owned  by Telefonica (Movistar). By ‘’monopoly’’ we mean mostly internet infrastructure – all the other Spanish wifi operators depend on Telefonica’s cables and availability. That also means that the starting wifi rates in Spain depend on Telefonica; that’s most probably why the adsl wifi rates in Spain are one of the most expensive in Europe, with an average internet connection (an average of 10Mpbs).

Though, now in big cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Alicante, Granada etc, the optical fiber internet service, is much more affordable than a normal Spanish Adsl connection. The average price for optical fibre in Spain is 50€ per month, with the difference that the internet speed can reach up to 300Mbps.

If you live in a small town or village, it’s very common not to have access to such type of internet access, since they haven’t quite finished implementing the infrastructure able to provide high wifi speed.

The major companies – Internet Provider Spain (ADSL) are:

Movistar (Telefonica), Jazztel, Orange, Vodafone, ONO (optical fibre Spain), Pepephone

Be aware that the internet customer service in Spain is not the most pleasant to deal with. In my opinion, the Spanish wifi customer must waste way too much time on the phone, listening to that annoying little music while waiting to get in touch with a qualified and resolutive internet operator. Plus, unfortunately, most of the Spanish operators won’t provide customer service in English.

Before I start describing in detail the other option, the portable internet, allow me to give you a piece of advice. If you’re planning to install your Spanish broadband ADSL, make sure, no matter the internet company you choose to work with, you read attentively the ‘’small letter’’ that appears in the contract before you sign it. This will help you avoid many potential unpleasant hidden fees or any type of false advertising.

In this post we will show you how to configure your phone, when using a Spanish sim card, in order to get the mobile internet access in Spain. We will add complete details about mobile settings, network settings, apn password, apn username, mobile network and so on.
As many of you may know, every mobile internet provider in Spain, has different parameters for the mobile internet access.

What does APN stand for?

The term APN is the abbreviation for Access Point Name.

Every time we decide to change our mobile internet provider, once we unlock our phone and finish our commitment with the provider, when we insert the new sim card, we realize we can’t surf the web from our mobile phone.
The main reason of this error, in most of the cases, is that we haven’t modified the APN config in our phone.
The APN is the access point in our mobile network that indicates our phone the virtual way it should follow in order to connect to the internet. Logically, each mobile internet provider in Spain, has its own parameters. Before making an unnecessary call to customer service, you can dedicate 5 minutes, going through your mobile settings and network settings on your phone and solve the problem yourself.
Normally, these parameters can be found in the access point of the phone’s network. Once you locate it, you must create a new one, by clicking on Add New (in the Menu where it shows APN, Username and Password). The information you have to fill in for setting up the correct APN profile, can be found in the chart below.

Spanish sim cards

The other solution for tourists in Spain is to just buy a local internet sim card. In order to have it activated, according to Spanish legislation, you must provide your passport details to the mobile broadband Spain distributor. The activation time for a sim card for Spain could take between 5 and 30 minutes and it can be activated in any shop related with technology (there are plenty!).
Note that the internet providers in Spain (sim card providers) won’t install it into your phones or ipads; they normally sell the sim cards as they come, in blister, without opening them. Though, 90 % of the time, the only thing you need to do in order to activate the Spanish sim card in your iphone or ipad is inserting the pin code and your device will automatically detect the operator’s parameters (Spanish APN).
There’s another 10 % of the situations where you must manually configure your phone or ipad, by inserting the Spanish APN. Otherwise, even if the Spanish sim card will be active, even if you are able to send or receive calls or text messages, the internet connection won’t work.
You must also know that if the mobile provider activates it correctly, but you’re not able to get the mobile internet Spain access to work, you cannot claim the money back. The only way of solving this delicate issue is by contacting with customer service and request a quick guiding through your phone settings. We all, obviously, do our best to avoid contacting with customer service or the long waiting time. Before you call, better check this link including complete details of the Spanish APN from the most important internet providers in Spain: LINK TO APN IN MBS.COM

Before you buy a Spanish sim card for internet, you must know:
Your phone has to be unlocked in order to admit, detect and read a Spanish sim card. If your phone was purchased on a contract with a local internet provider in your country, it means that your phone can only be used with the provider you have the contract with. It’s also important to know that if, for example, you bought your phone on a one year contract, that period ended and you fulfilled all the terms stipulated, even if you keep using their service, you have the right to request your provider to unlock your phone FREE OF CHARGE. The provider will probably do its best to make up excuses in order not to unlock it, so they can assure your continuity with their service, but you have to insist. Unlocking an O2 iphone or a BT iphone in Spain might cost around 150€. So that’s money you can save.
If you are normally using apps like Whatsapp or Viber, know that since they are associated to your phone number, once you start using a Spanish sim card in your phone, you won’t be able to use them anymore.
Only very few internet in Spain companies have customer service in English. Will add a list below with the major internet sim card providers in Spain, with links to their website and quick customer service description. Maybe you should consider paying a little extra for the the internet, so that you can also get a better customer service.
Low cost sim card internet providers in Spain will block the VOIP traffic. It means that, before buying a sim card for internet in Spain, you must ask the shop assistant that activates it if the internet can be used for traffic like Facetime, Skype, Viber etc
